In the world of evolving healthcare, patient counseling is the front and center of the practice of pharmacy. Guess what? From introductory knowledge,  practice, and to competency development, we have it all covered for students pharmacists.  In the In-patient setting, the Pharmacist Patient Care Process (PPCP) is paramount in patient counseling. In an outpatient setting for self-care, the QUest SCHOLAR-MAC standardized guides and rubric are pivotal for patient counseling simulations.

The dilemma arises when a mandate is placed on a student in the simulation lab to counsel a patient! Does Quest SCHOLAR-MAC have it all? Likely not! Is there anything missing that can complement and provide a holistic approach to patient counseling?

The answer is “Yes.” We do not have to look further than landing on Acronyms LEARN (Cultural Competency skills), PACE (Motivational Interviewing Skill sets), and OARS (Type of Questioning-asking how what, and when). Merging these with QUest SCHOLAR-MAC completes the counseling needs and transitions it from the Disease Centric Model to a Patient-Centric Collaborative Model through re-engineering technology using mind-concept mapping with wordsclouds to generate a diversified guide and rubric. Here, the patient is part of the decision process.

Many digital contents on patient counseling have been shared in the literature and online. This newly developing App on the other hand is unique in its own way.  It is a 3-D animated Video App that targets student pharmacists, graduate residents, and practicing pharmacists- providing a platform to acquire knowledge, skills, and develop competencies in patient counseling. It is a newly innovative way of looking at outpatient counseling from a totally holistic approach for better results. Let's dive into the video now and the APP at a later time.
